If gambling has stopped being entertainment, the NACADA helpline is 1192. It costs nothing to call and you do not need to have hit a crisis to use it. That is the number to save before you need it, not after.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Betting money set aside for rent, school fees or food.
- Chasing losses with larger stakes to get back to level.
- Borrowing to fund play, including from mobile lending apps.
- Hiding the extent of it from people close to you.
- Playing to escape stress rather than for entertainment.
- Relief when a deposit goes through, rather than anticipation.
Any one of those on its own is worth noticing. Two or three together is a pattern, and patterns do not resolve themselves through better discipline.
Controls that actually work

One thing worth being direct about: the tax structure means a player who deposits and withdraws without betting can still lose money to the 5 percent. Depositing to see how it feels is not a free action, and it is a poor way to test whether you still enjoy this.
